Catania: the social, cultural and economic heart of eastern Sicily, a city that’s had to rise from its ashes (literally) like a phoenix and capable of adapting to the ever-changing political circumstances of the island over the millennia, Catania is a city that forces you to live it intensely, for better or worse.

From the Pampaleone Glamping & Resort you can easily get to Catania city centre in about 35 minutes, traffic permitting, by car through the A18 highway. However, driving through the streets of Catania can be an unpleasant experience for those who are not used to it, so we recommend you leave your car at Carruba train station less than 5 minutes away by car (or Giarre-Riposto, 15 minutes by car, ask the reception which station best suits your needs). After just 20 minutes by train you will reach Catania central station, a 10-minute walk from Piazza del Duomo: and this is where we will begin our tour.

The majestic Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the elegant Cathedral of Sant’Agata is the ideal starting point to explore the city on foot. The majestic Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the elegant Cathedral of Sant’Agata is the ideal starting point to explore the city on foot. Catania is indeed certainly well-known for its sumptuous baroque, but it does not stop here: century after century the different dominations in the region and the destruction brought about by the neighbouring Mount Etna have blended together in a mosaic of styles and cultures that converge here to make the unique aesthetic identity that belongs to Catania.

While you are at the Duomo, visiting the long-standing fish market is certainly worth your time: a show that overwhelms your senses with the deafening noise, the pungent smell and the fluids you are forced to tread on to walk… In short, we warned you: Catania is very intense! The beautiful Porta Uzeda is only a short distance away, where you can get a glimpse of the majestic Mt Etna at the end of Via Etnea.

Mandatory stop is also the Roman Theatre of Catania and the annexed museums, which will allow you to immerse yourself in the rich history of the city through the archaeological finds that it has returned over the years.

Finally, do not forget to stop often for snacks: Catania has a varied gastronomic tradition and its street food will win you over from the first bite! We advise you to start with a nice coppo di paranza right at the fish market, you will thank us later!
